Claudia Whitten
Kilnformed Glass Artist
Claudia Whitten, a kilnformed glass artist, developed her interest in art at an early age, learning art concepts from her mother. Claudia’s curiosity stimulates her to explore new directions. She has studied under numerous master glass artists from the USA and Karl Harron from Ireland. A highlight of her education was going to the Northlands Creative Glass school in Scotland, exploring her own concepts under the direction of the renowned glass artist, Jane Bruce, in 2017.
Claudia’s work was recognized in 2007 by the Corning Museum of Glass’s publication, The New Glass Review. It is an annual survey of glass in contemporary art, architecture, craft, and design created in the previous year by emerging and established artists, juried by curators, artists, designers, art dealers, and critics.
In 2014, PBS Outdoor Idaho featured Claudia and her aspens on their show “Inspired by Nature”. She creates her aspen drawings using a sgraffito technique which consists of putting down a preliminary surface, covering it with another and then scratching the superficial layer in such a way that the pattern or shape that emerges is of the lower color. After the first firing of the black and white design, colorization is added in a second firing. Finally the piece is fired a third time to give it shape.
